Its actually quite a sad song a straight up relationship-journey/ anti-commitment/ love song but by far the most happy sounding ditty we've ever done, says Mike. Almost too much! But thats why we like it... On the B-side is an exclusive new track named The Source. Rhythmically, Hustle is one song on the album that was inspired by their experience touring the UK with Malian desert bluesmen Tinariwen a unique collaboration that aimed to fuse the sounds of the two bands together. We learned that you dont always need structure! says Mike. As long as there is presence, emotion and groove. It taught us that everything is open and adaptable... Its in that spirit exploration that Tunng have named their new album And Then We Saw Land, after a line cribbed from Hustle. And for a band perceived as being the epitome of English eccentricity, its opened up their world this is Tunng in Widescreen. We wanted to make a record that would be a great live set so I think we naturally started writing more powerful music, says Mike. My friend described it as Epic Folk Disco Brass Magnificent, and Im not sure you could call any other Tunng record that. The first Tunng album to take more than a year to write and produce, And Then We Saw Land is also the bands most collaborative effort to date, with each member contributing fully to the project throughout. The effect on the sound is pronounced its an album packed with joy and optimism. More than ever before, Mike has shared vocals with Becky Jacobs, whose otherworldly vocals are full of colour and character. Three songs contain what the band describe as The Mega Chorus a 15-strong group of collaborators and drinking buddies who lent their voices to the album one rainy night in an abandoned school hall in Londons Old Street. And they want audiences at future gigs to recreate the experience. Says Mike: I want audiences singing along and becoming... THE MEGA CHORUS!
